Mar 02, 2011 · I can't put my hands on a Windows 7 machine to answer my own question and I can't seem to find it on the intrawebz, so: Is there native UPS support via USB cable in Windows 7 to shut down the PC?? Or do you have to run the manufacturer's software? I would be surprised if native UPS support was removed, but I can't find any references to it so.....

There are a lot of references on the internet about the APC software (well, more like UPS vendor supplied software in general) being crap. Luckily, Windows Server 2008 (and 2003) have built-in support for APC UPSes. Furthermore when Windows Server shuts down, VMware Server needs to perform some actions on the guests as well.

Microsoft Vista, Windows 7, 8, &10, Windows 2008 & 2012 do not have a native serial UPS shutdown. For a serial UPS use PowerChute Business Edition or USB to serial converter. For any USB connected UPS these OS do have some configuration for shutdown if you do not want to use the supported APC software options.
