Yes, Ubuntu is optimized for multicore CPUs and has been for many years. Some background: "Version 2.0 (of the Linux kernel) was released 9 June 1996. There were 41 releases in the series. The performance increase may not be directly reflected in framerates. On my FX-6200, I was seeing around 180 FPS on flatgrass. After spawning just 10 NPCs, that number dropped quickly down to the sub 60s. With multi-core support enabled, I was seeing 185 FPS, but after spawning the same amount of NPCs, the framerate hardly budged from that number.
