    The following table from the microtype documentation (page 7) shows which of the micro-typographic features are available for the various engines:. As can be seen in the last line, xetex only supports protrusion. Some time ago, it was rumoured that font expansion would be added to xetex, too, but it seems that there haven't been any developments in this area recently.

    Regarding the microtype support: The newest version of xetex can do protrusion (I haven't tried it yet), lualatex can protrusion + expansion. The author of microtype has just announced on c.t.t. that a preliminary version of microtype exists which supports both engines.

    Microtype is a really awesome package. Try out Minion Pro, btw! It's a really nice font (goes great with Myriad Pro or frutiger) and it has a great math-package companion (MnSymbol), and if you like the font it's pretty easy to install and use with regular LaTeX (and/or pdftex, including epic support for the font in microtype).
