Jun 06, 2018 · A zero-width non-joiner is almost non-existing. Its only purpose is to split things into two. For example, 123 zero-width-non-joiner 456 is two numbers with nothing in between. A zero-width space is a space character, just a very very narrow one. For example 123 zero-width-space 456 is two numbers with a space character in between.

The zero width space is a useful Unicode character. It's white space but renders with zero width. Useful for hinting where a line break could go if a browser needs to wrap a long line. It's also good for faking out Twitter's annoying URL rewriter; if you stick a ZWS in the middle of a domain name then Twitter won't rewrite your text with a t.co redirect.

The goal was a was a browser extension that could sign the contents of an arbitrary <textarea> like an invisible "gpg --clearsign". The signature rules would have to be relaxed to accommodate common transformations servers do to user comments.
