Doesn’t Android support HLS on newer Android devices, which solves all your video playback and fragmentation issues? Not really. The main challenge is HLS was designed by Apple and optimized for iOS devices. Even though the live latency is pretty significant, everything else from the switching logic to the playback experience is excellent on iOS.

No desktop browser implements HLS and no one is planning to. HLS was a last minute resort by apple to stream video in iOS before HTML5 existed and they don't like Flash. I am not aware of any extensions that allow this. Only Apple implements HLS in all versions of Safari. Chrome for Android may also deprecate HLS soon when DASH is widely adopted.

Feb 18, 2014 · I am currently trying to successfully stream HLS to Android devices. I want the video to be played within a browser on an 4.3+ Android device. So far I was out of luck trying to get our video files (.m3u8) to run and came here for help since we use Wowza to stream our videos. Any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated.
