May 09, 2014 · Cisco ASA's user their own protocol for failover. It can be run as a cluster in either active/active or active standby mode. Basically the primary ASA will be the owner of the IP addresses while the standby can either have it's own IPs or none at all if you so configure it that way.

VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) is very similar to HSRP (Hot Standby Routing Protocol) and can be used to create a virtual gateway.
