Attics That Have No Flooring Unless expressly built so, an attic's joists are meant for carrying the load of the ceiling below and related elements, collectively known as the dead load. The ceiling load may include items like drywall, ducts, recessed lights, bathroom fans, and attic insulation. Most houses' attics are built without flooring.

The joists should support your weight, but the space between them almost certainly will not. The safest way to move around an unfinished attic is to create a catwalk (or walking platform) by attaching some 1x6 or 1x8 boards or strips of 3/4" plywood to the joists with screws (don't use nails because the hammering might disturb the drywall or plaster ceiling below).

Installing flooring material over the attic doesn’t quite leave room for the recommended insulation space needed to provide efficient home energy. A raised platform of lumber in dimensions of 2×4 or 2×6 with insulation placed between joists and covered up with a 12-inch plywood helps build the right flooring.

I am looking to add plywood flooring in my attic for storage page. There is a lot of space, very large areas. From what I've been reading, it looks to be ill-advised to add flooring if the roof was constructed with trusses instead of rafters (one such site).I have no idea what these are.
