Andy - I don't think it's solely a new tape thing, try running a second backup job using the same tape without ejecting after the initial run - the drive will go probably go offline? I've ran some further testing - I can run as many drive inventories (immediately after one another) as I like without failure.

To eliminate the possibility of a faulty drive/removable media, attempt to connect another tape device/removable media to the SCSI Controller and verify If RSM and Backup Exec are able to detect the other device. Or you may be able to move the current hardware to another server to see if the same behavior is seen.
