Can I move the support posts in my basement? I have a home that is about 30 feet by 60 feet with a full unfinished basement. It has running the length a beam that is 3 – 2×10’s. I was wondering what the spacing of the support post could or should be. What is there now varies from 6′-4″ to 7′-10″.

Nov 18, 2013 · Looking at my beam charts you would need a 14"x14" solid wood beam with a species that has a 1400 PSI fiber stress (to keep deflection below 1/360). As I suspected, that is a huge beam. You could use steel to reduce the size, but I don't have any charts for steel beams. 14 feet is just a really long span for a main support beam.4.2/5(75)

Dec 14, 2012 · My basement and house setup are identical, except rather than a steel I- beam, my main beam is comprised of three 2 x 12's sandwiched together and running the span. My house was built in 1983, and the run is supported by three vertical 4" steel posts, spaced about 6' apart, with the two on the outside being about 6' from the wall.

Jul 07, 2012 · Right now it's about 12' from the basement wall, I want to move it over so it would be 16-17' from the basement wall. Does anyone think there will be an issue with the structural support by moving it just 4'? Right now you can actually move the "jack post" a little because it doesn't have the full load of the I beam on it.
