Cat6 (Class E), Cat6a (Class EA) and Cat7 (Class F) are improved twisted pair specifications that can support 10GBASE-T applications. Each cable is backward compatible, meaning you can plug a newer twisted pair cable into a device that is created for a slower cable. Cat6 can be used for 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1000Mbps and 10Gbps.

Category 6 UTP cannot support a full 100 meter 10GBASE-T channel, limiting design flexibility Category 6A and 7A can support a full 100 meter channel and potentially longer. Siemon is working with Aquantia, a leading 10GBASE-T chip manufacturer to test their shielded 6A and 7A cabling systems in extended channel distances beyond 100 meters7 – instead of using category 6 UTP and shortening it.

CAT6 cable can be used in a 10G application, but there is a distance limitation of 55M (180ft). To reach full 100M (330ft) length, CAT6A cable must be used to comply with 10G specifications. CAT6A or CAT6 “Augmented” is the recommended cable for 10G networking applications.

Feb 15, 2012 · There has been testing that could consistently drive 10G over UTP at up to 55 meters, but there is no guarantee of it working, especially if you can't replicate their setup. Look at it this way: you can gamble on your Cat6 working, and then have to go out and spend the money to …

Mar 11, 2012 · To be sure you'd really have to go Cat6a according to Wikipedia. If you're unlucky you'll only get a maximum cable length of 37m and you have to be careful when bending it and stuff. Cat6A is a lot more resilient, and you can go up to 100m cable distance in all situations.

Feb 24, 2017 · Also cat5 does support 10g but only up to I think 30 meters. Gigabit is up to 100m. And if you don't already know you'll only get 10gb if both sides of hardware support it.

Feb 24, 2012 · Cat6 is certified 10g up to 100 FEET. Cat6a is certified 10g up to 300 FEET. The cost different now is not that great to go to cat 6 from 5e, but to go to 6a, it is still a big difference. We usually run cat6 …

Oct 07, 2014 · Officially, 10Gb runs over Cat6 up to around 55m without any bundles of cable iirc (and 35m if bundled), and on Cat6a to 100m. 10GBASE-T makes use of transmissions of 500MHz which needs better cable. You might get it running over short distances on Cat5e but check the counters on the switch and NIC for any errors, or run a proper tester if you have one.
