As some of you will remember, back in the days between DDR2 and DDR3 this same thing happened, where many motherboards were sold which supported both types of RAM.

Jul 30, 2010 · There were a very small number of motherboards that could accept either DDR3 or DDR2 memory (but not both at the same time). Unless your motherboard is one of those few, then no. And frankly, most of those motherboards sucked because they couldn't support dual channel.

Jan 17, 2012 · If your notebook is currently using DDR2 it won't support DDR3. They are both technically and physically different. There was only a handful of desktop motherboards supporting both but neither at the same time nor in all slots. They had 2 slots dedicated to DDR2 and another 2 for DDR3.
