Sep 17, 2007 · G729 requires a license to be able to use it. So right now 3cx doesn't support it. In the future, if I remember correctly, the 3CX team is considering supporting G729.

Jun 22, 2010 · If you're low on bandwidth, G729 does a good job for much less bandwidth. If you have the bandwidth, U-LAW/A-LAW are great because they have the best voice clarity. I don't know much about the GSM codec but I imagine it is somewhere in the middle between the two.

Come in as g729 and then gets transcoded into ulaw for my local network? So, when I have 3 phones on my network and only 1 outgoing call at a time, then I will only need 1 g729 licence for outgoing. In that case, why does a phone have to support g729 if it is using alaw to my Asterisk box and then gets transcoded to g729? And visa versa.

Both speech coding methods are standardized in 1990’s, and used in basic applications such as wireless communication, PSTN networks, VoIP (Voice over IP) systems, and switching systems. G.729 is highly compressed compared with G.711.

Not to hijack the thread, but licensing has already expired on g729 codec, you should not need to buy a license for it. If you google around, you will find out how. What I had read is that while the patents on G.729 have expired, you still have to pay the people who implemented and possibly optimized it.

The sip provider only accepts G729, so I created a new Region and Device Pool to use G729 as the audio codec and assigned the SIP trunck to it. My probelm is that when I place the call from my IP Phone 7940, there is no SDP sent to the provider so no negotiation occurs and the call drops.
