Kyle's comment is quite right in the general case, but Audacity is a purely audio application, it does not support MIDI. A possible way to make it work would be to use an external MIDI host like vsthost and then record in Audacity from the "what you hear" or equivalent audio source.

Feb 05, 2008 · It's a problem with Audacity in particular. Most Softsynths run as VST plugins that you attach to a particular track and then feed MIDI information to it. Since Audacity doesn't support either MIDI or full-featured VST plugins, Audacity can't use Softsynths unless they run as a stand-alone program and you can route the i/o creatively.
