BT’s Chief Network Architect, Neil McRae, has told the UK IPv6 Council that their roll-out of the Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) addressing standard was completed for “all BT Broadband lines” in October 2016 (except IPstream connections.. so not quite “all“), provided you have a compatible router.

Generally speaking the deployment of IPv6 (dynamic /56 prefix) across BT’s consumer ISP network in the UK has gone well but one key area where they still appear to be struggling is with adding support to their venerable HomeHub 5 router, which is widely installed across the customer base.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get IPv6 address on BT Infinity, I am trying to connect to some secure devices in Asia but they are on IPv6 with SSL so need IPv6 here as well. Sorry IPv6 is not supported on BT Infinity yet.

Alas, BT's PPP infrastructure is buggered; it only negotiates max. 1492, and does not follow RFC 4638 (tut, tut) but instead just forwards large frames on anyway. Worse, they don't let the customer choose which they have maximum support for, which causes drop-outs for large packets (see above) when the Ethernet hardware doesn't support it. 4.

BT made an official announcement in October 2016 that the rollout of IPv6 had been completed "for all BT broadband lines". I don't use a Home Hub but my understanding is that the HH4 and HH5 haven't yet been enabled to run with IPv6 - BT's promise of "early 2017" seems to have slipped somewhat - but the Smart Hub/HH6 has been, although I gather IPv6 functionality has disappeared from some HH6s.

Ipv4 and IPv6 co exist. Devices will use either. I don't know what the exact settings are called for the ASUS but effectively you want Native IPv6 DHCP /56 prefix delegated on the WAN side and auto configuration (either RADVD or SLAAC) on the LAN side. As far as I'm aware, BT have enabled IPv6 universally, so will be available to you.

To connect natively you will also need a broadband router to support IPv6, and there are currently few of these available. Tunnelled IPv6 is a way of tunnelling IPv6 over an IPv4 network so you can connect to IPv6 services. Most operating systems currently support both native and tunneled and Windows Vista and Windows 7 both allow you to ...
