Mar 05, 2011 · Keep in mind that the Canon 40D does not support UDMA (UDMA cards will still work, but you don't get the full benefit of faster speeds). Also keep in mind that card speed only starts to matter when you fill the buffer (17 RAW, 75 large JPEG) with long bursts or lots of shorter bursts.

Canon EOS 50D Review - Bob Atkins Photography

UDMA is Ultra Direct Memory Access and it's a faster interface then the "normal" CF interface. For it to work, both the card and the camera must support the UDMA data transfer protocol and the EOS 50D does (the EOS 40D didn't). This means that if you use a fast card with UDMA support, data transfer with the EOS 50D is faster than with the 40D.
