Feb 27, 2011 · PNG pretty much obsoletes GIF in nearly all cases except for animation (although it still have a little bit of browser support problem, IE6 doesn't support PNG's alpha transparency although regular GIF-like transparency is no problem). PNG is lossless format which means color information is fully intact. GIF is nowadays only useful for animation.

May 15, 2007 · As we all know, IE6 does not display png images with transparency very well. Since many people still browse with IE6, here is a small bit of code that fixes that problem. I have been putting it in the HEAD of my templates, but I'm not sure if that is the correct way for Drake. You must put a 1px x 1px transparent gif image in your template images folder.

It's hard to explain what exactly the problem is. People who answer the question think that we want to change the PNG file associations to Windows Explorer or something.
