Jul 31, 2011 · The original Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 only had HSM in its Nikon incarnation. The newer f/2.8-4 OS HSM version is available for all mount types. From what I've heard, the original is the better lens optically so if you can live without the stabilisation and better focus motor go for that. I used to have one and it was a very good bit of glass.

The Nikon D40 does not have a build-in Autofocus motor for AF lenses to Autofocus. AF-S Lenses are required for Autofocus.
