Aug 30, 2006 · Why aren't these phones smart enough to pick up a voice vlan from teh Cisco device? Is there a way to remedy this? CDP is a security risk anyway, and if I want to turn it off, now I can't because the Polycom phones rely upon it. Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.

The RealPresence Trio system does not support power negotiation over Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) with Cisco switches using CDP. CDP is supported for VLAN negotiation. If you are powering RealPresence Trio using an IEEE 802.3af power over Ethernet compliant switch, power budget is negotiated by a hardware handshake at power up - CDP is not used.

Polycom phones send only 3-4 CDP messages hoping that the connected device is CDP capable. If it doesn't receive CDP messages, it assumes that the connected device is not CDP capable and stops sending CDP messages.
