The SATA 3.0 is backwards compatible though.

So is the SATA III 6.0GB controller. You will be limited to SATA I 1.5GB speeds though so I'd save the few euros and just get SATA II or find SATA I.
Jun 19, 2015 · If you use a HDD than you will not have any benefit from Sata III. Sata II allready can handle 2.4 mbit wich is about 300 MB/sec. This is allready more than a standard HDD usually can reach. With a good and Fast SSD you can exceed this and therefore Sata III will be the better choice.

Nov 15, 2013 · I would say, no, unfortunately! SATA III (6GB\ps) is backwards compatible with SATA II (3GB\ps), so in english to all non-IT individuals, they WILL work in the console, just not at 6GB\ps but at 3GB\ps. IGN, yes, did do some testing, but the results can be misleading. You do receive faster times with an SSD, but naturally that would happen anyhow as that's what they were built to accomplish.

Anyqways, just curious as to how the PS4s SATA controller is designed, and whether it's even worth it to have a SATA III drive in there. It's a SATA II. That is not what is causing the noise, and regular HDD's, single handelly, can't push even full SATA II speeds. Only SSDs get bottlenecked even by Sata III …
