Yep, unix/linux doesn't support nested groups. It would be usful if it did, but it just doesn't. Windows does, and Active Directory does.

With Linux trustees, you can also opt to AND with Unix permissions, or ignore them all together. The only downside is that it is a kernel module (which itself is not a bad thing), but you will probably need to recompile the kernel with appropriate support (as per the trustees docs).

if I understand you correctly than the answer is no - AIX groups can only contain users, not other groups - but any user can be member of multiple groups. As long as you do not use extended permissions (ACLs) anywhere, you should not need nested groups like you have them in windows (local and global groups).

getent group will not enumerate all your AD groups so you can't grep. But you can do getent group _groupname_ and it will perform a lookup on the named groupname. I've also confirmed that my getent group _groupname_ really does unroll nested group memberships. – roaima Jan 27 '15 at 21:02

Nov 01, 2017 · Creating new group in AD with only users and then synchronize it to Azure AD creates extra administration for administrators and confusion for end-users. Dynamic Groups in Azure AD as of today don’t have support for “Member Of” or similar hence don’t solve the problem. Adding nested groups to Azure AD would add a lot of value to Azure AD.
