But it interprets the TGA transparency as an alpha channel. If you look at the channels in both images in PS you will see that both have transparency, just different kinds. I suspect that TGA does not support background transparency, but does support alpha channel transparency.

You could, of course, make a channel in Photoshop for the transparent layer, and save it as a second targa file. But you'd need to use the second file to mask the first in some other app (such as Photoshop) to get the transparency back again. Might as well just save a Photoshop file. DS

May 21, 2008 · If I load a TGA file with transparency, and save the file as a PNG without making any changes, the transparency color changes slightly. Shouldn't the a PNG look identical to the TGA file? I only notice a change in quality with images that have transparency. This problem doesnt happen with Gimp or Photoshop. Feb 28, 2011 · PNG pretty much obsoletes GIF in nearly all cases except for animation (although it still have a little bit of browser support problem, IE6 doesn't support PNG's alpha transparency although regular GIF-like transparency is no problem).
