Sep 12, 2019 · Hate to reply to an old thread, but I spent hours looking for a solution on a VMWare 12 system with a Windows 10 host. First of all, switching to the vmxnet3 driver gave the option for VLAN tagging in the driver's advanced settings.

Does the NIC on your workstation support trunking and do you in fact have the port on the physical switch configured for trunking with VLAN 5 allowed? If the NIC doesn't support tagging, or if the switch is set in access mode, then the tagged frames are likely being discarded.
