May 16, 2016 · USB 3.0 drives will work in 2.0 mode with a 3.0 or 2.0 microUSB cable. Portable drives (USB powered) might not be able to draw enough current from the Wii. The usual workaround for this is to use a powered USB hub but I would go for a powered drive from the start.

The WiiU doesn't even support USB 3.0 so you're more than fine. Since USB 3.0 is downwards compatible you can use a USB 3.0 device though. Running a 3.0 device on a 2.0 port is referred to as forward compatibility. Fair enough. I'm not a native english speaker, thanks for clarifying <3

I find that very difficult to believe. They're forcing a USB 3.0 port to only run at 2.0 speed? What would be the point of that? dont ask me im stating what i no is that the wii can read usb 3.0 hdds using a usb 3.0 cable with zero problems but i couldnt tell you anything about the speed.

So whats the deal with USB 3.0? [Wii] I have heard a lot of different opinions about USB 3.0. Some say they have 5 HDDs with USB 3.0 and none of them work with an USB Loader. Some say its actually better to use USB 3.0 , some say only a few USB 3.0s work , some say it requires an external battery.

Feb 19, 2018 · Well, first at all, the Switch doesn't has USB 3.0 support at the time, the USB 3.0 port works exactly the same than the USB 2.0 one, so you aren't getting any advantage from it. It was said that the USB 3.0 funcionality will be added in the future (Who knows when).

I don't think it will. USB 3.0 isn't a standard yet and Nintendo has no need to push it. It would be awesome since they said this console will USB external HDD support. PS4 and the next Xbox will most likely have it though.
