Nov 09, 2014 · The root of this is Windows XP x86 is MBR only meaning that the limitation is to do with MBR. Disks exceeding 2TB must use GPT which extends the limit significantly, however Windows XP does not have this support currently. A 32 bit version of windows generally will only see the protective MBR on a GPT disk.

Jan 20, 2011 · Answer Wiki. Yes, I use 2TB drives all the time on my 32 bit Vista systems, and I often partition them into one big honkin' partition. Note that Windows uses base-2 numbers and the drive will look about 8% smaller than it would if you go by the drive vendor's base-10 capacity nomenclature.

Dec 25, 2013 · Microsoft is pretty clear that Windows XP doesn't have built-in support for internal hard drives with a partition larger than 2.2TB. Special drivers and the controller in the enclosure are likely what is allowing XP to use a larger external drive.

Because the maximum number that can be represented by using 32-bits is 4,294,967,295, this translates to 2.199 TB of capacity by using 512-byte sectors (approximately 2.2 TB). Therefore, a capacity beyond 2.2 TB is not addressable by using the MBR partitioning scheme.
