Aug 25, 2011 · The X220 supports SATA III, or SATA 6Gbps regardless of CPU. I think you're thinking of USB 3.0, which is indeed only available on the i7 model (unless you add an ExpressCard one).

Jun 02, 2011 · Put the SATA III SSD into the UltraBay. Use a SATA cable to connect the X220 and SATA III SSD. If you open a OCZ SSD, you will find the circuit board is very thin, so you can ether make a 7mm case for the circuit board or you can put the Intel 510 circuit board into a Intel 320 case.

So on the X220, one has to be used for a wifi NIC, obviously, so with an SSD there is no room for WWAN/GPS. SSD is the one I'd go for, as I can always tether (once Nokia finally bloody enables it on my Lumia 800), but it would have been good if the X220 had an additional mini-PCIe slot.

I thought my X200 was pretty fast with the SSD running at SATA II speeds, but after upgrading to an X230 with SATA III it flies. However it depends on how much storage you need. SSDs upwards of 240GB are quite expensive and even more so for mSATA versions, whereas normal HDDs are cheap up to 1TB but also way slower.
