Jul 10, 2013 · "The destination does not support long file names. Please enter a name for this file" to which it then offers a file name without spaces as an option. My question is what would cause this to be an issue for this specific user. I have already tried remapping the network drive to no avail.

So, what I would recommend you do is: Double-check the format of the external drive that this happens to;

Oct 12, 2012 · I realise that I could track down the files with the long names and abbreviate them but they are amongst 10.596 other files in 700 folders & sub folders, the path to the files would be identical on either drive i.e. drivename:\music\album\filename, they copied successfully from another internal drive onto the external USB drive but will not copy from the external drive onto my PC's internal drive.

Dec 11, 2016 · Long file name problem: copied to external drive but can't copy back I just finished replacing my motherboard/CPU and a few drives and re-installed Win10 in the process. I backed up the data on the drives to USB drives and had no issues.

In the past the maximum supported file length was 260 characters (256 usable after the drive characters and termination character). In Windows 10 long file name support can be enabled which allows file names up to 32,767 characters (although you lose a few characters for mandatory characters that are part of the name).

Jan 02, 2018 · folder copies with nested files and folders exceeding the 255 character limit- the challenge is when you're copying GB's worth of data, only to have windows explorer halt on a long file name hours into the process- no choice but to cancel the copy or skip the file and hope there aren't many more that explorer will again fail to handle.. very frustrating.

Sep 12, 2011 · We have run into similar problems before, it is not just the individual file name but the entire path that makes up the "long file name", so all the nested folders contributed to this length. Have you the user look at all the folder names along the path, some of them may need to be shortened with abbreviations, etc.
