Jun 15, 2009 · This is a dependency of acpi-support, not shipped by it. acpid is a multiplexer for /proc/acpi/event: it matches ACPI events against the rules in /etc/acpi/events/, and replicates them to /var/run/acpid.socket, where hal etc. can read them from.

The default ACPI setup may be satisfactory for some users, however a little extra configuration may be required to get the acpid daemon to treat some basic ACPI events properly (AC power plug in/out, multimedia keys, etc.). This worked for me - my Ubuntu Server install didn't have /etc/acpi/event/lidbtn either, but I installed the acpi-support package and then it showed up. The package installs a whole bunch of other X11 related packages but doesn't enable graphical mode, don't worry.

Debian 6.0 "Squeeze" users: the eeepc-acpi-scripts package conflicts with acpi-support; as root, you must apt-get purge acpi-support: this removes all of the acpi-support scripts that would remain in /etc. If you do not follow this step, you will cause conflicts.
