May 08, 2015 · Why do switches send out multicast packet out of all ports? Regarding OSPF on multiaccess network, the purpose of DR/BDR is so LSAs are only sent to DR & BDR to conserve bandwidth. But what I see on Packet Tracer is that the switches always send any multicast packets out of all ports (except incoming port), so how's that conserving bandwidth ?

Jul 28, 2006 · Multicast is more efficient than broadcast, because broadcast packets have to be received by everyone on the local link. Each OS takes an interrupt, and passes the packet on for inspection, which normally involves some data copies. In multicast, the network card doesn't listen to these multicast packets unless it has been told to do so.
