Jan 19, 2018 · This module describes how to configure devices to use the Cisco Group Management Protocol (CGMP) in switched Ethernet networks to control multicast traffic to Layer 2 switch ports and the Router-Port Group Management Protocol (RGMP) to constrain IP multicast traffic on routing device-only network segments.

Multicast Catalyst Switches Support Matrix - Cisco

Feb 26, 2019 · IGMPv3 join and leave messages are not supported on switches that run IGMP Filtering or Multicast VLAN Registration. Switches support IGMPv3 snooping based only on the destination multicast MAC address and does not support snooping based on the source MAC address or on the proxy reports. These rules are helpful in understanding the default performance of multicast. Unmanaged switches will flood multicasts, while some routers may not support multicast traffic at all. However, many switches and routers can be configured to support multicast traffic, and that support is based on the network addresses uses by multicasts.

Ethernet Switches (detail)

This would soon result in overload of the network. Switches and Multicast Traffic. Many Ethernet switches handle multicast traffic as if were broadcast traffic. When a multicast packet reaches such a bridge/switch, it forwards the packet to all active interfaces, effectively flooding the network.

Configuring network infrastructure to support the NLB ...

Apr 05, 2019 · To support this configuration, you must configure the network infrastructure to use static ARP entries and MAC address table entries. Network switches cannot learn the NLB multicast MAC address in the course of their usual operations. If you skip the manual configuration step, the network switches may flood NLB traffic to all ports or drop packets.

Why do switches send out multicast packets out of all ...

May 08, 2015 · Why do switches send out multicast packet out of all ports? Regarding OSPF on multiaccess network, the purpose of DR/BDR is so LSAs are only sent to DR & BDR to conserve bandwidth. But what I see on Packet Tracer is that the switches always send any multicast packets out of all ports (except incoming port), so how's that conserving bandwidth ?

Networking 101: Understanding Multicast Routing

    http://www.enterprisenetworkingplanet.com/netsp/article.php/3623181/Networking-101--Understanding-Multicast-Routing.htm
Jul 28, 2006 · Multicast is more efficient than broadcast, because broadcast packets have to be received by everyone on the local link. Each OS takes an interrupt, and passes the packet on for inspection, which normally involves some data copies. In multicast, the network card doesn't listen to these multicast packets unless it has been told to do so.
