What Dr. Farrell is good advise for most phobias, but fear of flying is different. Why? Because no matter how relaxed biofeedback can help you be, the amygdala - the part of the brain that releases stress hormones - is still going to do its job. It's job is to release stress hormones EVERY time it notes something that (to it) is non-routine.

I had sort of a fear of flying up until 1996 when I was meant to go by ferry to the Isle of Man for a 5 days holiday but there was a mistake with the booking and the b&b where I was to stay offered to pay the extra £25 each for me and my sister to fly from Glasgow. I was a little nervous but found it to be fine.

I've flown several times and once a 12 hour flight overseas. Here is what I did. I ate a decent dinner the night before but didn't eat anything again after 6 pm.

Flight anxiety and anticipatory anxiety are different. In flight anxiety, some "stimulus" such as a noise or a movement of the plane triggers the amygdala. Within just a few thousandths of a second, the amygdala will decide whether or not to release stress hormones.

Eventually as other things happened in my life I sort of forgot to worry about flying and my fear passed. These days I fly long haul maybe 20 times a year and short haul 4 or 5 and it's like getting on a bus although out of the blue I still get the odd twinge of panic but treat it with contempt....what will be will be.
