For some reason the default FreeBSD 7.0 port (jailed environment) breaks fsockopen() on SSL URLs, returning a constant stream of nothing! In my case this resulted in php-cgi bringing down lighttpd completely, in rapid time! Avoid FreeBSD/jails/fsockopen + SSL. Use curl_init() instead.

curl cURL support enabled cURL Information libcurl/7.16.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8g zlib/1.2.3 openssl OpenSSL support enabled OpenSSL Version OpenSSL 0.9.8g 19 Oct 2007 I'm not sure that having cURL enabled is vital to this, but since it mentioned OpenSSL I thought I'd include it here anyway for completeness.

[2005-09-23 12:55 UTC] werner at usit dot uio dot no Description: ----- fsockopen claims that it does not have SSL-support when using it on an ssl:/-URL. phpinfo() says that OpenSSL is enabled, the OpenSSL-functions openssl_pkey_new and openssl_csr_new works, and with the exact same setup of Apache/PHP on Linux, this works great.

Oct 08, 2007 · I'm trying to use SSL for sending SMTP mail, but I see the "No SSL support in this build" message. I'm doing this on Redhat EL and php is compiled '--with-openssl' as expected. In fact, I'm using PHPmailer successfully on the same server and PHP build with SSL - in a non-drupal script. I'm therefore certain that SSL availability on PHP is not the problem. Any ideas? Thanks

Thank you for the link, it confirmed my suspicions. I was looking into the OS CA lists and I didn't find the CA I uploaded into pfSense. So it looks they are stored elsewhere, and aren't used for verification by some of the processes/services - which IMHO looks like a bug to me, or at least lack of proper documentation, if the CA imported into pfSense are used only for some tasks and not others.

Not sure then. All of the documentation and whatnot state that you have to have the OpenSSL php module enabled for it (ssl connection using fsockopen) to work properly. Other than what I have stated above, I have no idea.
