On that basis, I am convinced that I have configured all of the moving parts more or less correctly, and that MapInfo seem to be the problem piece in the stack. Discovery and Debugging - MapInfo XML. Digging further into the GeoServer logs, I can see the raw XML which MapInfo is sending to GeoServer to effect the update transaction.

The reason being that MapInfo styles are set per feature, whereas ArcGIS, QGIS, SLD (used in Geoserver for styling WMS layers) and GeoCSS (as far as I know) all style laters by attribute (or rules). So, what I think you need to do is either redo your styling, or find a way to convert from MapInfo styles to another form of styling.
