nnmaildir also stores extra information in the .nnmaildir/ directory within a maildir. Maildir format was designed to allow concurrent deliveries and reading, without needing locks. With other back ends, you would have your mail delivered to a spool of some kind, and then you would configure Gnus to split mail from that spool into your groups.

I'm trying to setup using gnus for mail using gmail.. I have a solid mbsync installation which saves my mails in a maildir folder. I've been reading lots of guides, including very up to date ones, and all of them seem to use dovecot in such a setup. Why is dovecot necessary? I am using offlineimap to sync my gmail account to a locak maildir, then using gnus to read that directory everything is fine but gnus uses its own flags for marking read unread status of messages and they are not synced back to gmail. is there a way to force gnus to use standart maildir flags?

Sep 08, 2011 · I am using Gnus with Offlineimap to read GMail. Offlineimap fetches the mail from GMail and stores in in Maildir folders on my local machine at /mnt/Mail/.I point Gnus to these folders, from where it reads the mail and displays it to me.

For this, I use OfflineImap, which synchronizes IMAP email with a local maildir. This integrates nicely with Notmuch, while I found Gnus maildir support slow and clunky. Fast search Search lives at the core of Notmuch. As a response to the Sup email client (get it?), Notmuch provides indexing, and searching, while search seems peripheral to Gnus.
