Jan 05, 2017 · My first attempt to work around this issue was to re-create the XFS filesystem and disabling CRCs (mkfs.xfs -m crc=0). However, in grub-bhyve this resulted in grub either throwing the same inode errors, or magic number errors. Then I decided to ditch XFS and went with ext4, which works solid, at least in the grub-bhyve part.

GRUB last stable release (2.0.2beta) is from 2 years ago, and this is the version that most distributions ship. So, while XFS, for example, was supported back in the time of the release, this filesystem has evolved* in the meantime but GRUB did not follow with a new release. Meaning that GRUB cannot boot from a boot partition that is XFS formatted.
