High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) is a bit-oriented code-transparent synchronous data link layer protocol developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The standard for HDLC is ISO/IEC 13239:2002. HDLC provides both connection-oriented and connectionless service.

The serial main interface comprises the physical interface and port. If you are not using the serial interface to support Cisco HDLC and PPP encapsulated connections, then you must configure subinterfaces with permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) under the serial main interface. Frame Relay connections are supported on PVCs only.

There are other implementations of HDLC though that is used across asynchronous links. I believe wiki is accounting for all uses and your book is tar getting common usage on a WAN circuit. Toby Sent from Cisco Technical Support Android App

Apr 13, 2011 · HDLC too, supports synchronous, full-duplex operation as SDLC. HDLC has an option for 32-bit checksum and HDLC does not support the Loop or Hub go-ahead configurations, which are clear minor differences from SDLC. But, the main difference comes from the fact that HDLC supports three transfer modes as opposed to one in SDLC.
