ImageMagick 6.4.8 includes support for OpenMP. Under most OS's, OpenMP scales linearly with each additional core. However we have found a few OS's where ImageMagick dogs with OpenMP support. Try building ImageMagick without OpenMP support. Add --disable-openmp to the configure script command line and rebuild / reinstall ImageMagick.

if it's still not working, it means that it's not related to IM, but that openMP based program don't run correctly on your system. In that case you should consider the following question Why OpenMP program runs only in one thread, and check openMP support with a shorter program to build and run than IM !

The sigmoidal-contrast.c module reads an image, applies sigmoidal non-linearity contrast control, and writes the result to disk just like the previous contrast enhancement program, but now it does its work in parallel (assumes ImageMagick is built with OpenMP support).
