I tried installing the Snake YAML plugin and it says in its notes that the default YAML setting for file extensions has to be changed to take over the .yml extensions - so implying that native IntelliJ should format YAML??? I saw a bug on youtrack showing that formatting for YAML was still an open issue so I'm a bit pessimistic about this.

May 31, 2017 · Click on Editor → File Types → YAML/Ansible; Add the patterns *.yaml and *.yml. It will tell you that they are already used, that's right, by YAML, so select Overwrite (or something like that) Note: the plugin features may not work in IntelliJ 2016 if the YAML support plugin is also active. This will be fixed in future versions.
