While IE6- doesn’t explicitly support alpha-transparency out-of-the-box, if you will, there is a workaround that ensures PNG’s cross-browser compatibility.

Dec 07, 2009 · Basically IE6 doesn't do alpha transparency properly. It has a go at doing transparency with PNG-8 images (with boolean transparency), but can't handle PNG-24 at all. That's the default position. If you need full-blown alpha transparency in IE6, then your best option would be to use a script which introduces hacks that make it work.

It's hard to explain what exactly the problem is. People who answer the question think that we want to change the PNG file associations to Windows Explorer or something. IE 6 is a major problem to Web developers (IE 7 is a problem as well, but for now, let's overlook that, since it does at least implement PNG alpha), and the sooner it stops being used, the better. Instead of using this hack, users of IE 6 should be encouraged to upgrade to IE 7.
