Aug 29, 2008 · IPsec was created to be a security protocol between two and only two devices, so a service such as multicast is problematic. An IPsec peer encrypts a packet so that only one other IPsec peer can successfully perform the de-encryption. IPmc is not compatible with this mode of operation.

Jan 04, 2006 · The current method for solving this problem is to use generic routing encapsulation (GRE) tunnels in combination with IPsec encryption. GRE tunnels do support transporting IP multicast and broadcast packets to the other end of the GRE tunnel. The GRE tunnel packet is an IP unicast packet, so the GRE packet can be encrypted using IPsec.
