In this post I will explain why tcpdump sometimes doesn't show the VLAN (802.1q) tags, when dumping network traffic. The issue is related to libpcap and VLAN hardware acceleration in the Linux kernel. Patrick McHardy, fixed the kernel in version 2.6.27, and also fixed libpcap.
