Apr 11, 2006 · I am now running Fedora Core 5, it has good hardware support but I can't get my ATI AGP 8x 9600 card to work with it. As you all know the ATI drivers are far from ready. What do you think would be my best bet if I was to buy a new graphics card for my linux box. I will need full 3d/OpenGL support. I have AGP 8X on my box. Any ideas? Thanks, Tom

If you need more texture memory than you can get with the AGP GART (theoretically up to 256 MB, but in practice usually 64 or 128 MB due to kernel allocation issues), you could use PCI accesses and have up to a couple gigs of texture space. Note that this is the only way to have X and GLX use write-combining with MTRR support on the AGP bus.

If you are using a Linux 2.6 or newer Linux kernel that has the Linux AGPGART driver statically linked in (some distribution kernels do), you can pass the. agp=off parameter to the kernel (via LILO or GRUB, for example) to disable AGPGART support. As of Linux 2.6.11, most AGPGART backend drivers should respect this parameter.
