I have borked an HFS+ journaled filesystem by forcing, so I can tell you from experience that it is a bad idea. You could try the Paragon ufsd driver, which provides ntfs and hfsplus filesystem support. I am fairly certain that you can actually use the hfsplus while still journaled.

Touch & HFS+ Journaled

Nevertheless, how hard will it be to get the Touch to mount an HFS+ Journaled USB portable drive in Read-only mode and write the database to an SD card?

This is almost certainly the cause of the problem -- or at least, one of the causes. Permissions mis-matches can prevent writing to the volume, too, as LinuxJim pointed out.

Mounting HFS+ volumes under Linux

May 08, 2008 · Powerbook G4 (the so-called "TiBook") that was running Mac OS X 10.3. That version of the OS uses Apple's HFS+ file system. I wanted to mount that hard drive on one of my Linux systems running FC6 so I can take the data off. The man pages only mention HFS as a valid filesystem, so I tried mounting the volume with: mount -t hfs <blah blah>
