No, you absolutely do NOT need ALTQ to re-route traffic to and from your freebsd jails. I use pf to map traffic on external IPs to the static IPs that my jails run on. The following entries direct traffic to and from the internet to the jails for my mail server: I have dozens of jails set up like this.

Added "device mem" because I saw it somewhere in a config sample with pf, also add devices pf, pflog & pfsync with options altq + cbq,red,rio,hfsc, priq & nopcc and finally added options device polling with hz=1000.

ALTQ is only available by compiling its support into the FreeBSD kernel. ALTQ is not supported by all network card drivers. Refer to altq (4) for a list of drivers that are supported by the release of FreeBSD.

And the Mac OS X kernel apparently doesn't support it. Okay, so this doesn't really make sense. Why would Mac OS X include the BSD pf firewall but not include support for the queueing software necessary to make that firewall work? Isn't that kind of counter-productive?
