My HP Pavilion 15t has a 1920x1080 display, but I use a 2560x1080 external monitor over HDMI 2.0 I have no problems on the desktop (intel grapihcs) and no problems in games (nvidia graphics).

HDMI often supports much higher res than that: The HDMI spec since 1.3 (2006) certainly allows for it. For example, my cheap little Acer Aspire One AO722 netbook supports 2560x1440 via HDMI to my 27" Auria monitor.
