Zilean's strengths are NOT complimented significantly by building AP; Rather, he is better built with utility and AP on the side. Note that only 2 of Zilean's abilities scale with AP, and Zilean's main purpose isn't to deal damage.

He's still good in the support, the only issue being that most people would see him on a team and think his potential is wasted without all the farm of being mid.

I still think cho'gath has the short end of the stick, even though you are right about how CC > Damage, the limitations placed on his skills make it hard to land on anyone competent, not to mention the durations and restrictions make it hard to even take advantage of the CC's.

Zilean does not have a great early game, he needs points into his abilities to get stronger and he only has one damaging ability, so he's also somewhat team dependent. So I'd say he doesn't really come 'online' until level 5 or 6. So, champions he's weak against in the mid lane I would say are:-Champions with a better early game or good early game.
