There are a lot of OpenType fonts out there which contain not only ligatures but also alternative glyphs, stylistis sets, old style numbers, lining/proportional numbers, true small caps and some even have true petite caps. MS Word supports some of these features but not all (no true small caps, for example). LibreOffice supports none of these OpenType features.

Applications native to linux (not Openoffice and Scribus, they may have started as native Linux applications, but are now multiplatform and Windows seem to be the preferred developer platform), have since a couple of years excellent Opentype support, as they use native standard libraries directly and not some cross-platform hack.

OpenOffice will work to a limited degree with the TrueType varieties of OpenType fonts. Unfortunately, the majority of OpenType fonts, particularly the higher quality typefaces, are based on Type 1 Postscript outlines. The current level of support for CFF OpenType fonts within OpenOffice is abysmal under Windows and nonexistent under Linux.
