The versions of 8i that are certified for Windows 2000 will work well with XP. The ones that are certified will say so on the CD label. I agree that any hardware good enough for XP should be good enough for 8i, but I'd recommend at least 256MB of RAM, just because XP is a hog and you need some left over for 8i.

If you are using XP Pro, then you can connect to your Oracle 8i database if you have installed Oracle Client software on your workstation. I would only recommend the 8i or 9i versions of Oracle Client for connecting to an Oracle 8i database.
