Sep 14, 2010 · Okay, this always happens after you post something, but I think I figured it out. PAE support is also dependent on hardware DEP. I think on that ESX 4.1 host, in the Dell Bios setup, the the Execute Bit feature is disabled, so Windows is doing DEP thru software.

Jan 15, 2007 · From what I can ascertain, the 400mHz Pentium-M chips do not support PAE. Just about every other recent Intel CPU does. This means that you cannot run Tiger in VMWare. I have a 1.8 Pentium-M (Dothan) and I have the same issues as you. Desktop P4 (Northwood) is fine. I haven't found a work around yet.

Physical Address Extension (PAE) is a feature to allow (32-bit) x86 processors to access a physical address space (including random access memory and memory mapped devices) larger than 4 gigabytes. Ubuntu 12.04 uses the PAE Linux kernel by default for 32bit ISOs so old computers that don't support PAE can't boot the latest Ubuntu version.
