If by "Running on VirtualBox", you mean that you are running Ubuntu on VirtualBox, be aware that VirtualBox has a slightly less then stellar performance record regarding graphics acceleration, and as such this could be considered a problem with VB, not Ubuntu.

As it stands you will probably need to install s3tc from deb-multimedia or the proprietary blob driver for your GPU, if there is one available. S3TC is not firmware, it's just a separate lib, but is patent encumbered..

Feb 13, 2014 · Wow that title is very misleading. Granted integrated GPU/CPU combos have come a long way. It should play some games, but its not going to play Half-Life 2, Amnesia, Counter-Strike:Source or DOTA2 at high resolutions.

Note to Valve: For the next Mesa release, if your apps only submit pre-compressed data for S3TC textures, you can check for the ANGLE_texture_compression_* extensions or GL_S3_s3tc to see if you can do precompressed texture data even without EXT_t_c_s3tc.
