The pNFS server support is added in 4.0 kernel and available for block layout type only (pNFS defineds BLOCK, OBJECT and FILE layouts types). CentOS 6.x clients support FILE layout type only (7.x supports all three types). There are two open source user space NFS servers which you can use: nfs-ganesha or dCache.

Support for Parallel NFS (pNFS) as part of the NFS v4.1 standard is available starting with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4. The pNFS architecture improves the scalability of NFS, with possible improvements to performance. That is, when a server implements pNFS as well, a client is able to access data through multiple sources concurrently.

The nfsd changes for the Linux 4.0/3.20 kernel provide pNFS block server support. The pNFS block server support for the NFSD kernel code allow for an NFS client connected to a shared disk to do block I/O to that disk in place of NFS reads and writes. pNFS is short for Parallel NFS.

CITI: pNFS

Linux pNFS features a pluggable client architecture that harnesses the potential of pNFS as a universal and scalable metadata protocol by enabling dynamic support for file layout format, storage protocol, and file system policies. The architecture has been tested with the file, block, object, and PVFS2 access methods. WIKI. pNFS Wiki; Mailing List

It seems to me running a pNFS server on Linux is not as simple as you thought it is, mainly because pNFS is more a block-based protocol (like iSCSI) than the classic network filesystem you know. NFS is just used to do some meta data stuff between the clients and the server, all data access is done via a block-based protocol.

The NFSv4.1 pNFS server is a set of server resources or components; these are assumed to be controlled by the meta-data server. The pNFS client still accesses one meta-data server for traversal or interaction with the namespace; when the client moves data to and from the server it may directly interact with the set of data servers belonging to ...
