Jun 19, 2015 · Note: libpng.load now returns two arguments. The first argument is the result tensor, and the second argument is the color bitness. It will be either 8 or 16. For images with smaller color bit depth (for example, 4), the value is upgraded to 8 bits. See also #74 and #75.

Jul 17, 2012 · We have been trying to figure out if Corona SDK supports 16-bit PNG. From reading some of the old threads from 2011, it sounds like while Corona SDK can read 16-bit PNG, it will still be expanded into 32-bit PNG in memory. So, while it helps to reduce the desk file size, it doesn't reduce the amount of texture memory required.

The linked-to image shows as being "16-bit" in Windows 7's "Properties". I guess you're just seeing various applications falling back to converting down to 8-bit for display, which (I guess) is pretty expected since most display devices don't support 16 bits.
